Do you Even know? Have you ever stopped to think about it? I’m not talking about society’s definition of success. I’m talking about yours.
Society has success all packaged up in a pretty little box and vaulted up on a pedestal for us all to squabble and dream over. Why is that? Why do we care about that version of success?
That success has nothing to do with us. It’s not worth fixating yourself on. Forget it. It’s meaningless.
Success only has true meaning when it comes from you. Without your unique purpose and benchmark, success isn’t success. Its an empty pursuit towards false hopes of happiness and fulfillment. That path leads nowhere. Turn around and go back.
Creating your own definition of success.
What does it truly mean to you?
It should be fulfilling. But what is fulfilling? Its whatever gives you that warm fuzzy feeling that you can’t describe. I call it improvement. Evolution.Taking a leap. Taking a chance on something that seems so scary you’d rather stay still. It’s about coming out stronger on the other end.
Success is relative
Success to one, is not success to another. The two should not be compared because they run on incomparable scales. You wouldn’t measure the intensity of an earthquake with a thermometer, so why would you measure your progress based off someone else’s definition? Their scale, their visions and their point of reference are very different than yours.
Success is personal
Don’t have it any other way. Focus on what you can control. Focus on what you can change: yourself, your habits, your energy, your emotion, your surroundings. Your everything.
Success is what feels good. It must fulfill you in some way.
Let Success Be. It doesn’t have to fit the mould.
Everyone is dealt different cards in life. How you react and how you evolve determines who and what you become. We all have different capabilities, come from different backgrounds and go through unique circumstances that make us incomparable to others. Be you. Do You. And that’s all.
Know what you want. Define where you want to go.
Success is what you want to feel. It’s where you want to go. Define it. Understand it. You’ll need all that before you can keep yourself on track.
What is success without measurement?
To feel success, you must have a benchmark. Knowing where you started is just as important as knowing where you’re going. The gap between the two is your progress. The little wins are your momentum and the ending is your success. It’s all a process. You might go through it once. Or you might repeat it forever. It’s up to you.
The pursuit of success is multidirectional
It can drive you forward if forward is where you want to go. It will keep you still if still is where you want to be. Hell, you can even go backwards if that’s a better place for you to be. The direction is not important, it’s the journey and the purpose behind it that matter. Your pursuit does not have to be infinite – that’s a choice.
What does success feel like? Am I there yet?
Your current definition of success is probably grandiose and seemingly unattainable. That’s because you borrowed it from society. Go five it back. You don’t need it anymore.
What personal success really feels like:
- exponential gains
- personal satisfaction
What the strive for societal success feels like:
- giving up
- utter unhappiness
- Short lived fame
- An endless pursuit of attention, wealth and other meaningless things that have no connection to what really make you feel alive.
Now you tell me: Are you there yet?
Over to You
What influences your definition of success? Do you have some re-evaluating to do?
